This was the official visit to our Club by District Governor Dee Buckland and not only did we enjoy her address, we also heard from her husband Jonathan Weir about the Australian Rotary Indigenous Health Scholarships Partner Programme. In addition DG Dee inducted Rory Beattie as a Member of our Club, and he gave us a summary of his interesting background! DG Dee cited the memorable philosophy of RI President Shekhar Mehta: ‘Service is the rent I pay for the space I occupy on this earth’, and told us that the District 9455 focus for 2021/22 is on a number of key issues, namely Homelessness; Diversity Equity & Inclusion; Aboriginal Cultural Awareness; Partnerships; and Protecting our environment. Each of these headings was covered in some detail. DG Dee also mentioned the Rotary Brand and told us that only about 20% of the population really knows about Rotary. There are two important events that we should consider – a virtual Conference of Rotary Zone 8 this weekend, and the District Conference in March 2022. Jonathan urged our Club to join others which are donating $250 to the Indigenous Health Scholarships programme, and after his induction, Rory Beattie took the stand and introduced us to himself and his wife Mary – a lovely couple who have been married for 52 years. Rory was born and educated in South Africa, and after becoming a Chartered Accountant he got involved in a cooking oil company that was based in Zimbabwe and which was ultimately taken over by H J Heinz. Rory and Mary eventually disentangled themselves from all of this and moved to Australia 11 years ago. We welcome you both to our Club, and we look forward to many years of friendship with you!
