Jan Owen is a crucial part of the Kimberley Dental Team (KDT) along with her husband Dr John Owen, and Jan came to give us the low-down on the amazing dental work that happens in that remote part of WA. It all started in 2009 when Jan went to Halls Creek with a choir which interacted with Aboriginal communities, and they soon noticed that these people were in dire need of dental attention. John hadn’t practised as an orthodontist for 25 years but soon got back into it, only to discover that about 38% of the kids were in severe dental strife. The Government dentist in Kununurra insisted on people making appointments which was impossible for the communities to actually do (due to not having phones etc.), so the Kimberley Dental Team started visiting the area in May and August each year, ably partnering with the Rotary Clubs of Perth, Heirisson and Perth City East. The modus operandi was to go into the classrooms to teach basic dental hygiene, after which they would check each child’s teeth and plan treatment which often included the insertion of simple dentures. Over the 17 years since they started in 2009 they have made 32 trips and spent 92 weeks delivering dental care. The KDT services were badly affected by Covid, but they have since written a book, assisted by a “ghost” writer, titled Outback Dental Adventures.
