As a continuation of the club’s involvement with Karya Mulia School for the Deaf in Surabaya, East Java, Simon Tomlinson and Lisa Checker were financed to go to the school to instruct the teachers there on the latest developments in teaching deaf children. Today’s meeting was one to give feedback from Simon and Lisa. Some new aspects came to light in communication skills with differing signing systems in use especially as the children use two different systems. Another aspect was the learning difficulties faced while learning maths – Lisa is a maths teacher and skilled in this area. Parent perspectives were also assessed in all the learning areas with a day being devoted to addressing the parents and their needs. The school is dedicated to providing the students with a positive pathway into life. Future actions should be aimed at encouraging the continuation of the programme and maintaining continuous contact with the school through the Rotary Club of Surabaya. The children’s progress should also be assessed on future visits. Time was spent on putting the teaching into practice and teacher actions. The resources provided to the school by the Rotary Clubs of Cambridge and Mount Lawley were surveyed and assessed so that future requirements could be determined. It was noted that many of the resources already provided appeared to be in pristine condition and not used – the school was encouraged to make use of these and not to be concerned about their becoming worn as they can all be replaced. The hospitality provided by all the staff was amazing according to Simon and Lisa – nothing was a problem.
