David Thomas, President of the Claremont RSL sub-Branch, came to remind us about Remembrance (or Poppy) Day, and to let us know what we can do to help. This year it will be on Monday 9 November, and the RSL will be collecting at the Swanbourne & Claremont Train Stations, Claremont Quarter, and possibly the Floreat Forum. Our Club’s Poppy Day School collections will also go ahead and efforts will be made to educate the teachers and students about the intent: it aims to generate donations which go towards the welfare of needy service people. It is quite startling to learn for example that there are a number of veterans who are homeless and who desperately need help. David himself spent 21 years in the army, and since retiring from that he has been involved in various catering activities and latterly running his own business. Last year the Claremont RSL sub-Branch raised about $4K, and hopefully our Rotary efforts will help them surpass that amount this year. The RSL is also planning a BBQ at the Claremont Showground on Wednesday 11 November, and a bugler from Churchlands Senior High will do the honours at 11.00 am. David was accompanied by his wife Sharon and by Alan Wilson, President of the Cambridge RSL sub-Branch, and we were glad to see John Travlos again and Honorary Member Jeanette Wood.
