We welcomed representatives from the RSL and from Hale School this week – Dave Thomas from the RSL and two from Hale: staff member Philip Venables and pupil Dino Raftopoulus. In short, Hale organises fund raising activities in support of the RSL and our Club supports the RSL by manning a booth at the Floreat Forum on Remembrance Day. Phil and Dino started the proceedings with Phil outlining the Hale set up (where he has been for 33 years) and explaining that he has been Head of Havelock House for 16 years. Dino is in year 12 and is Captain of Havelock House, and he told us about the fundraising activities that the pupils get involved in, including a Charity Night during which the boys perform. Dino has been positively affected by the experience and this will stand him in good stead in the future. Dave Thomas is on the RSL WA Board, and amongst many other roles he is President of the RSL Claremont Sub-Branch. Dave gave us details of the history of the RSL in WA (which started 110 years ago), and he explained that many Veterans have issues which are not necessarily apparent to those around them. The RSL WA Workforce Connect program provides free career support for WA veterans, their partners, and immediate family members, and there are over 100 sub-branches in Perth and regional WA.
