Jane Rowlands joined us this week to tell us all about the Collegiate Principal Initiative which has been established to provide public school leaders with support and data; coaching; opportunities which facilitate progress; feedback; and an environment in which trust can be fostered. The Department of Education has around 61,700 employees located in seven regions and spread around 834 schools, and so far 520 Principals have chosen to go down the path of having the support of a Collegiate Principal. The Department has recognised that Acknowledgement of Country is a vital way for all people to show awareness of and respect for Aboriginal cultures and heritage, particularly as, for example, in the Kimberley region twenty four languages are taught in the public schools. In the Fitzroy region much of the curriculum is on country i.e. it is physically located on traditional land, and two-way knowledge sharing takes place. Two important accountability processes exist, the first being the Public School Review (PSR) self-assessment and the second being the Principal Professional Review (PPR). The PSR provides for commendations to be recorded as well as recommendations for improvement, whilst the PPR is designed to help Principals reflect on their leadership so that they can improve their performance.
