Andrew Harpur emigrated to Perth from South Africa 3 years ago, and he presented a very interesting account of his working life under the title ‘From Banker to Baker’. As a young man Andrew set off for a spell in London and became involved in merchant banking. In due course he returned to SA and continued to work in the banking sector for the next eight years. Eventually he decided to have a career change and became involved in a business which manufactured wooden crates. This lasted for about two years after which he was attracted to a logistics company – still based in SA but with worldwide connections. This occupied Andrew for nine years until he was offered the role of SA manager of Staedtler – the international German company which makes and sells a huge range of stationery items. Andrew’s final job in SA before emigrating was with a company that manufactures shells which are used in mines. On arrival in Perth Andrew acquired a bakery, and he has developed this into a commercial wholesale operation which operates 24 hours per day and has a staff of 50 people. The factory is based in Morley and undertakes around 350 deliveries per day to various retail outlets. Andrew says that there is an abundance of cheap labour in SA and that the market in Perth is much more competitive and testing.
